In short
Blackout curtains block essentially all outside light using a dense three-pass coated lining. In Dubai they do a second job that matters just as much: the lining cuts solar heat gain through the glass, so the room stays cooler and the air conditioning works less hard.
How much light do blackout curtains actually block?
A properly fitted blackout curtain blocks 98–100% of light. The fabric itself blocks all of it; the small remainder leaks around the edges. Fitting is what closes that gap — a track wider than the window, a generous overlap at the centre, and returns at each end that meet the wall.
This is the single biggest difference between a made-to-measure curtain and a ready-made panel. A ready-made curtain hung on a pole the same width as the window will always leak light down both sides and across the top, no matter how good the fabric is.
Do they help with heat and cooling bills?
Yes, measurably. The coated lining reflects a large share of solar radiation before it enters the room. On a west-facing Dubai window the surface temperature difference is immediately noticeable, and the AC cycles less often through the afternoon.
The effect is strongest on floor-to-ceiling glazing, which is why we fit so many of these in Marina and Downtown towers. Pairing blackout with a sheer layer gives you the daytime option of light without heat.
Which rooms suit blackout curtains?
Bedrooms first, then media rooms, nurseries and any room used for daytime sleeping. They also solve shift-worker and jet-lag problems that no other window treatment fully addresses.
In living rooms most clients prefer a layered approach: sheers by day, blackout drawn in the evening. We fit both on a double track so the change takes one movement.

Questions
Blackout Curtains, answered.
Yes, if they are fitted correctly. The fabric blocks all light, so any remaining glow comes from the edges. We fit the track wider than the window, add a centre overlap and close the returns to the wall, which removes it.
Yes. The blackout performance comes from the lining, not the face fabric, so a white or cream curtain blacks out exactly as well as a dark one. The lining is hidden behind the decorative fabric.
Typically three working days from approving the fabric to installation. We measure at the free home visit, and fitting a standard room takes about an hour.
They reduce it noticeably but do not soundproof a room. The lining adds mass and the folds break up reflections, which softens traffic noise. Fuller gathering and a floor-length drop both improve the effect.
Dry cleaning is recommended for lined blackout curtains — washing can shrink the lining at a different rate to the face fabric and cause puckering. Vacuuming with a brush head every few months handles normal dust.
Yes, and it is a common pairing. A motorised track handles the weight of lined blackout fabric easily and can be set to close automatically at sunset or on a schedule.
