In short
A pencil pleat gathers the fabric into narrow, closely spaced folds along a drawstring tape, producing a soft continuous ripple rather than distinct pleats. It is the most forgiving heading, works with almost any fabric weight, and is the least expensive of the traditional finishes.
How does it differ from a pinch pleat?
A pencil pleat is gathered onto a tape and can be loosened or tightened. A pinch pleat is stitched into fixed folds. Pencil reads softer and more traditional; pinch reads crisper and more tailored, and holds its shape permanently.
How much fabric does it need?
Two-and-a-half times the track width. Pencil pleat relies entirely on gathering, so it needs more fabric than a pinch pleat to look right — which narrows the real price gap between the two more than people expect.
Track or pole?
Either. Pencil pleat is the most flexible heading — it hooks onto a track for a clean concealed line, or onto rings on a pole where you want the hardware visible.

Questions
Pencil Pleat Curtains, answered.
It reads traditional rather than dated. In a plain modern fabric with generous fullness it looks current; in a heavy patterned fabric it looks period. The fabric decides, not the heading.
Yes — that is the advantage of the tape. If you move house and the new track is a different width, the same curtains can often be re-gathered to fit.
Yes. On a track with a centre overlap it seals well. On a pole it leaks a little more at the top, as any pole-hung heading does.
Very well. Pencil pleat and wave are the two headings we most often specify for sheer and chiffon, because both hold even folds in a fabric with no body.
Yes, on a track. It stacks slightly less evenly than a pinch pleat under power, but the difference is small.
Dry clean if lined. Unlined pencil pleat sheers can usually be washed cold — release the gathering first, or the tape puckers.
