A pelmet is a fabric-covered board fitted above the curtain that hides the track and closes the gap at the top. It does real work as well as decorative work: it stops the light leak and the warm-air draught that escape over the top of every curtain.
What does a pelmet actually do?
It closes the top of the window. Light spills over the heading of any curtain, and warm air convects down the glass and into the room. A pelmet blocks both, which is why bedrooms with pelmets are noticeably darker and cooler.
Pelmet, valance or cornice?
A pelmet is a rigid board covered in fabric. A valance is a soft gathered fabric strip. A cornice is the same idea in painted timber or plaster. Pelmets sit between the two in formality and are the most common of the three in Dubai villas.
Does it suit a modern interior?
A deep traditional pelmet does not. A shallow, straight-edged pelmet in the same fabric as the curtain reads as a clean architectural band and works well in a contemporary room — or use a recessed ceiling pocket instead for the same effect.
