In short
A roller blind is a single flat panel of fabric that winds onto a tube at the top of the window. It is the most space-efficient window covering available, and the fabric choice sets the behaviour: blackout for darkness, sunscreen to cut glare while keeping the view, or plain dim-out in between.
What is the difference between blackout and sunscreen roller fabric?
Blackout fabric is coated and blocks all light. Sunscreen is a technical mesh that blocks 90–95% of UV and cuts glare while staying transparent enough to see through. Sunscreen is what you want on a view window; blackout is what you want in a bedroom.
Sunscreen is specified by openness factor. A 3% openness gives strong glare control and good privacy; 10% keeps more of the view but lets more light through. On west-facing Dubai glass we normally specify 3–5%.
Do roller blinds fit inside or outside the recess?
Both work. Inside the recess looks cleaner and is the usual choice; outside the recess covers the frame and cuts far more light leak, which matters for a blackout blind in a bedroom.
Are they suitable for kitchens and bathrooms?
Yes — this is where rollers beat curtains outright. PVC and moisture-resistant polyester fabrics wipe clean, do not hold cooking smells, and are unaffected by the humidity that makes fabric curtains a poor choice in a wet room.

Questions
Roller Blinds, answered.
The fabric can, but light will always pass down the sides between the blind and the reveal. Fitting outside the recess, or adding side channels, is what gets you close to true blackout.
We fit chain safety devices as standard, and recommend cordless or motorised blinds in any room a child uses. Looped chains are a genuine strangulation hazard and we will not leave one unsecured.
About 3 metres before the tube begins to deflect in the middle. Wider windows are better served by two or three blinds on one headrail, which also makes them lighter to operate.
Yes, and rollers are the easiest blind to motorise because the motor sits inside the tube. Battery and hard-wired options are both available, with app and voice control.
Wipe with a damp cloth. PVC and sunscreen fabrics clean completely; textured polyesters should be spot-cleaned rather than scrubbed. Never machine wash a roller fabric — it destroys the finish and the blind will not hang flat again.
A sunscreen or metallised-backed fabric reduces solar heat gain significantly. A standard dim-out fabric helps much less. If heat is the main problem, say so at the visit and we will specify accordingly.
