A roman blind is made from curtain fabric that folds into horizontal pleats as it rises. It gives you the warmth, texture and colour range of a curtain while taking up almost no wall space — which is why it suits rooms where a full curtain would crowd the furniture.
When is a roman blind better than a curtain?
When the window is smaller than the wall, or when furniture sits against the window. A roman blind gives the same fabric quality as a curtain but stacks neatly above the glass instead of spreading across the wall on both sides.
They are also the better choice on a window you want to dress individually in a room with several windows, where curtains at each one would look heavy.
Can roman blinds be blackout lined?
Yes. Blackout lining is standard on any roman blind we make for a bedroom. Because the blind sits inside or just over the recess there is some light leak at the sides — fitting outside the recess with a generous overlap minimises it.
How much space do they take when raised?
Roughly 20–25cm of stacked fabric at the top of a standard window, depending on the drop and the lining weight. Mounting the headrail above the window rather than inside it keeps the whole glass clear when the blind is up.

Roman Blinds, answered.
Very. With blackout lining and an outside-recess fit they darken a bedroom effectively while taking far less wall space than curtains. They are a common choice in apartment bedrooms where the wardrobe sits close to the window.
We advise against it. Roman blinds are made from curtain fabric, which absorbs steam, cooking smells and humidity. A roller or aluminium venetian blind is the right answer in a wet room.
Up to about 2.4 metres as a single blind. Beyond that the rod pockets sag in the middle and the folds stop sitting evenly, so we split the window into two blinds on one headrail.
Vacuum with a brush head regularly and dry clean when needed. The rods come out first — we show you how at installation. Never machine wash a roman blind; the lining and face fabric shrink at different rates.
Yes. A motorised roman is a good upgrade on a tall or hard-to-reach window, and it removes the operating cord entirely, which matters in a child’s room.
More fabric, more construction. A roman blind is lined, interlined where specified, and hand-finished with rod pockets and rings. A roller is a single flat panel on a tube.
